Guilty Pleasure: Pretty Little Liars
Things I know about Pretty Little Liars:
Nothing, because the show has gotten so outlandish and there have been so many plot twists it is now close to devoid of meaning.
I will still watch it.
Why would I choose to watch a show that makes no sense and is directed at an audience consisting of girls who are 10 years younger than me and probably resemble Regina George? Because for all of its daytime soap opera-y cliff hangers and all of the hissy backstabbing and paranoia, it’s delightfully juicy and just plain fun to watch.
Despite the impossibility of remembering each murder and every clue in an attempt to figure out who “A” is – that’s the mysterious, faceless, homicidal blackmailer who has been hounding a pack of not-so-mean mean girls for several seasons, in case you are unfamiliar – it is equally impossible not to enjoy trying to figure it out. And after every episode there is that one friend who also harbors a secret, shameful adoration for the show who you will be able to gleefully phone immediately after and yell “OH MY GOD THAT WAS INSANE” and endlessly debate who A is.

And now for my theory, because duh.
(1. Spoilers ahead. 2. I am not going to bother providing background on this because, as I said, the plot across seasons is impossible to follow at this point)
In the first or second season (I think), there was a flashback episode in which the girls recount a Halloween spent with Alison. Someone relays a story Alison told her about two twin girls – one who was murdered. It seemed like a pretty purposefully placed story, but it was never brought up again. I, however, have been harping on it ever since because I am convinced Alison has a sister she either doesn’t know about or is hiding.
In the past season, we found out the girl, Bethany, who was murdered the night Alison disappeared and whose body was mistaken to be Alison’s, was repeatedly visited by Alison’s mother when she was a resident in an insane asylum. “Great, we found the sister!” I thought. But still, no clues were given at that point hinting that Alison was not the only daughter in her family.
Last week’s Christmas special revealed Alison’s mother once bought two identical Christmas gifts, one for Alison and one presumably for another girl, which she fervently ordered Alison to deny having seen after she found them. Now we’re finally getting somewhere.
So when are they going to tell us Bethany was Alison’s long lost sister? And what does it have to do with A?
Yeah. I have no idea. But it has SOMETHING to do with it.
