Pretty Little Liars Morphs Into Mashup Of Portal And Super NES’s Barbie Super Model

The season finale of Pretty Little Liars took the show’s penchant for WTF moments to a whole new level when A kidnapped the four PLLs and locked them in some sort of weird underground industrial compound doubling as a life-sized Barbie mansion/Portal-esque obstacle course.

The fact that Mona is alive isn’t so surprising – the script has been hinting at that for several episodes now. What’s surprising is that A – who is apparently Charles, an unknown brother of Alison’s – has had Mona imprisoned this whole time and has been forcing her to pretend to be Alison. Obvious question: why not just kidnap Alison? Is this bad writing, or does the answer to that question mean something, like that she’s in on it? Or that her long-lost brother loves her enough not to kidnap her but not enough to forgo psychologically torturing her, because that makes sense?

Also, this whole twin brother thing is pretty confusing. It seemed obvious to me that Bethany was Alison’s long lost twin sister – all the evidence pointed in that direction. But now her brother has a long lost twin too? What the hell? Was her mom selling her less cute kids off to be experimented on, or what? And how is it possible that NEITHER of them remember having more siblings??

Obviously A is a millionaire, because how else could he afford to build an underground compound with exact replicas of all the PLL’s real bedrooms, plus outfitted with security cameras and scheduled GLaDOS-reminiscent voiceovers. Oh, and let’s not forget the electrified fence, which must have cost an arm and a leg not just for the materials but to actually power, because how the hell can that thing even turn on in the middle of a forest?

So many questions, my little liar comrades. If you’ve got answers, I’d love to hear them. But realistically, I think this pretzel has too many knots.
